i love long, mysterious walks on the beach
When Chicken didnât like someone, I trusted his instinct. Didnât force that person on him. Even for birds, no was a complete sentence. As humans, weâd been trained to ignore that instinct. We were asked to play nice, for everyoneâs sake.
Meg might be right that my laser focus on Roy could be obscuring the bigger picture, but I had a feeling that once this was behind us, when Astrid was comfortably and lavishly retired, or at the very least, not in a jail cell, and with me at the helm, Iâd have to have a little talk with Parrots of the Caribbeanâs star employee.
Yes, things were different on Half Moon Cross, but something wasnât sitting right with me.
But there I was, focusing on the theft again.
âWe have to consider that Vanessa might not have been murdered on the beach, and someone brought her there to make it look like she was,â I said as I stared at the whiteboard.
âDoes it even matter if the murder weapon isnât found?â Meg asked. âNo one will be able to prove anything.â
âMaybe itâs time for us to take a long walk on the beach.â I plucked Chicken off the desk, where heâd gotten way too close to a stack of papers. Cockatiels never met a piece of paper they didnât want to shred, and Chicken could very well be destroying evidence if he tackled this latest challenge.
He squawked in protest, but I wasnât giving in on this one.
âWe could.â Meg leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms in front her chest and gazing up at the ceiling. There was no missing the dark circles under her eyes. We needed closureâno matter what it was. âBut if you were to dispose of a murder weapon, would you leave it close to the body?â
âProbably not, unless I was in a total panic, which tells us our culprit wasnât.â I put Chicken in his cage for a minute so he could have a snack and some water before we headed out. âBut the bird sanctuary might be the perfect place to leave it. The sanctuary is close to Azure, protected, on restricted land, and the mangroves are pretty thick. If the murderer had access to a small boat, it would be a good place to hide a weapon. It would take a long time to find anything there.â
Meg sighed. âAnd it would be the perfect place to leave the murder weapon if someone was trying to frame Astrid.â
Once we erased the whiteboard, cleaned up any evidence of our investigation, and got Chicken into the worldâs cutest flight suit that looked like a pair of denim overalls, we headed over to Azure. It was the first time Iâd been in a car since arriving at the villas. Meg said that the parking lot at Kennethâs hotel had the best beach access and was also closest to the sanctuary.
I definitely had some apprehension about the possibility of running into Kenneth. What
