i love long, mysterious walks on the beach

When Chicken didn’t like someone, I trusted his instinct. Didn’t force that person on him. Even for birds, no was a complete sentence. As humans, we’d been trained to ignore that instinct. We were asked to play nice, for everyone’s sake.

Meg might be right that my laser focus on Roy could be obscuring the bigger picture, but I had a feeling that once this was behind us, when Astrid was comfortably and lavishly retired, or at the very least, not in a jail cell, and with me at the helm, I’d have to have a little talk with Parrots of the Caribbean’s star employee.

Yes, things were different on Half Moon Cross, but something wasn’t sitting right with me.

But there I was, focusing on the theft again.

“We have to consider that Vanessa might not have been murdered on the beach, and someone brought her there to make it look like she was,” I said as I stared at the whiteboard.

“Does it even matter if the murder weapon isn’t found?” Meg asked. “No one will be able to prove anything.”

“Maybe it’s time for us to take a long walk on the beach.” I plucked Chicken off the desk, where he’d gotten way too close to a stack of papers. Cockatiels never met a piece of paper they didn’t want to shred, and Chicken could very well be destroying evidence if he tackled this latest challenge.

He squawked in protest, but I wasn’t giving in on this one.

“We could.” Meg leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms in front her chest and gazing up at the ceiling. There was no missing the dark circles under her eyes. We needed closure—no matter what it was. “But if you were to dispose of a murder weapon, would you leave it close to the body?”

“Probably not, unless I was in a total panic, which tells us our culprit wasn’t.” I put Chicken in his cage for a minute so he could have a snack and some water before we headed out. “But the bird sanctuary might be the perfect place to leave it. The sanctuary is close to Azure, protected, on restricted land, and the mangroves are pretty thick. If the murderer had access to a small boat, it would be a good place to hide a weapon. It would take a long time to find anything there.”

Meg sighed. “And it would be the perfect place to leave the murder weapon if someone was trying to frame Astrid.”

Once we erased the whiteboard, cleaned up any evidence of our investigation, and got Chicken into the world’s cutest flight suit that looked like a pair of denim overalls, we headed over to Azure. It was the first time I’d been in a car since arriving at the villas. Meg said that the parking lot at Kenneth’s hotel had the best beach access and was also closest to the sanctuary.

I definitely had some apprehension about the possibility of running into Kenneth. What
